So you want to be an FBA pro?

Are you interested in becoming an FBA expert? It's surprising that while there are legal requirements for this assessment process for many students, there are no standards for training or implementation. This course will help you enhance your skills so that you can conduct, write, and present a precise, professional, and ethical functional behavior assessment. By the end of this course, you will be equipped to perform an FBA with confidence and competence.

Functional Behavior Assessment Course

Adopting a Comprehensive Process Through an Evidence-based Approach

Course Summary:

This remote training includes eight weekly 1-hour sessions that will instruct participants in how to conduct, write, and present a professional and ethical Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). The instruction will be provided by a highly trained, board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) who has conducted dozens of FBAs across a multitude of clients with varying exceptionalities in schools for over 15 years. This course is evidence-based, reviews the laws and requirements surrounding conducting an FBA, and is presented through a behavior analytic lens. Participants will go through the actual FBA process as they progress through this course, ending with a fully completed ‘mock’ or actual FBA, a certificate of participation and continuing education credits as well as up to 5 hours of consultative support for the first time they conduct an FBA of their own (support from implementation through presentation- using the time as they see fit). This training includes eight live online instructional classes, guided notes to enhance learning and participation, and homework assignments with individualized feedback to prepare learners for conducting, writing, and presenting a high-quality assessment with greater competence and confidence. Sessions will be limited to 8 people to allow for depth of learning and individualized learning needs.

Frequently Asked Questions:

• Who is this course for? This course is designed for any school personnel who are or will be responsible for conducting, writing and/or presenting a functional behavior assessment. This may include but is not limited to: special education teachers, school psychologists, behavior interventionists, or BCBA’s who would like to improve their practice (BCBA CEUs provided for BCBA’s).

How much homework should participants expect? Participants are asked to complete an assignment related to the content presented during each 1-hour session. The homework which is a direct application of what was taught, is a portion of the FBA process and should not take more than 30-45 minutes.

How does this course benefit the school/district? This training enables school staff to conduct FBA’s with greater confidence and competence. While this course will help to improve the process and results, it may also streamline the process for some participants, making it a less daunting task. As staff become more competent in this skill, it supports the school’s internal capacity and ability to provide services and support to students that might currently be provided by outside contractors.

What can the participants expect to learn from this course? This is a jam-packed course! Your participants can expect that we will cover the following topics: the purpose of an FBA, the law related to FBAs, how to address student history, rationale, goals, assessment methods, operational definitions of behaviors, observation summaries, data collection and analysis, interviews, questionnaires and surveys, impressions, synthesis and summary of findings, recommendations and finally presentation of findings.

How does scheduling work for this course? EJC is passionate about the dissemination of the science of ABA and supporting schools with conducting better assessments for students. This course works best if the one-hour sessions are separated by one week to allow for the participants to complete their homework which is directly aligned with a portion of the FBA they are writing. If you have a cohort of staff who you would like to register, please reach out for scheduling options.

What will happen if one of our participants misses a session? Each session will be recorded for the review of the participants only. If someone misses a session, they will have the opportunity and responsibility to watch the recording to get the content they missed so that they can complete the homework and stay on track. Extenuating circumstances will be treated and supported on an individual basis.

Price per participant: $1,350 *10% discount offered to districts who register their own cohort of 6 or more participants.
